A short brief of who Kaido might be.
Kaido is once Dr. Vegapunk's greatest experiment. The unbeatable creature. Kaido was a well known pirate in the New World along side Big Mom, Whitebeard, Roger and Shiki. Shanks is still a rookie and later become the newest and youngest Yonkou.
Before Kaido become a Yonkou and a pirate he was experimented to be World Government's greatest weapon. The World Government did not expect Kaido to become what he is now. Kaido is now seen as a threat and betrayer (by becoming a pirate).
At some point Kaido could have gotten a hand on very rare Zoan devil fruit. Kaido want his own devil fruit army to start the biggest war involving all MONSTERS of the New World so he can die if suicide and handing himself to the Marines doesn't help. He made a deal with Doflamingo to get Caesar Clown (apprentice of Dr. Vegapunk) to create SMILE devil fruits for his crews. Caesar is a double agent to Kaido and Big Mom. Caesar was captured by Big Mom to conduct giant experimentation for her in Punk Hazard (original Vegapunk lab). Soon after, the story lead to Strawhats arrive at Punk Hazard.
In conclusion, Kaido had some ties to Big Mom with keeping Caesar hostage, involving experiments (Vegapunk to Kaido and Caesar to Big Mom), Judge Vinsmoke is somehow involve since he used to worked with Dr. Vegapunk and Dr. Vegapunk could have alter Kaido's dna in result creating a TRUE MONSTER.
